Until now, the main restriction for the use of natural materials in activewear has been their moisture-wicking limitations.
One of the benefits of regular cotton is its natural breathability and thermo-regulation, provided by the woven structure of the fibres. This fabric composition is also hydrophilic and therefore, very good at absorbing sweat from the skin. The problem is however, it then holds onto the moisture rather than allowing it to pass though the fibres, so that it can be evaporated away. This consequently creates a clammy environment during exercise.
Conversely, Polyester is hydrophobic and can be considered sweat-wicking, as it does help moisture to evaporate away from the body. On the other hand, the amount of sweat it can absorb from the skin in the first place, is limited and it is thermo-constricting due to poor breathability. So, while polyester helps to reduce clamminess, it still leaves you feeling hot.
Our patented mineral treatment of the cotton further increases the absorbency but crucially, it also creates a more dispersed and cleaner structure of the fibres, allowing moisture to move more rapidly through the fabric and away from the body (up to 10 times faster than regular cotton). For the same reason, it is also quick-drying.
In this way, we are able to achieve unusually enhanced heat and moisture control from such a soft and natural material.
Additional benefits of the all-natural, nano-composite coating applied to Dojo products are the long lasting anti-microbial properties.
Textiles are subject to an accumulation of bacteria during their use. This comes both from our own skin and sweat, as well as environmental factors.
The specially selected minerals that are applied to our cotton work on a microbiological level by inhibiting the cellular function of bacteria. The organic nano particles actively block enzymes that usually transport nutrients between bacteria cells and also slow down their metabolic pathways. The results of which, have been proven to reduce the presence of bacteria by up to 86%, under independent SGS certified testing.
The prevention of bacterial and fungal development, consequently helps to eliminate post-workout odours. Body odour is not the smell of sweat itself but is in fact the by-product of bacteria metabolising the sweat as a source of energy for its own growth.
We actually have two types of sweat. One is secreted from the eccrine glands in the skin, which helps to cool our body and is mostly water and salt. The other comes from apocrine glands around hair follicles and is triggered by stress, such as exercise. Unlike eccrine sweat, the apocrine sweat is more complex and rich in fatty acids and proteins, including sialomucin, which contains glucose. As bacteria breakdown and ‘feed’ on these monosaccharides (simple sugars) through a process called cellular respiration, an unpleasant odour is released into the surrounding environment, which is what gives our skin and clothing an undesirable smell.
Thanks to its unique anti-microbial properties, Dojo Sportswear can be confidently worn throughout the day. This increased personal health and hygiene allows you to wear more and wash less.
Dojo leggings are hypoallergenic and have a pH level of 5.5 to match that of the body’s natural microbiome. Unlike with synthetic equivalents, this means there is no skin irritation, which makes our leggings a particularly great choice for sufferers of eczema, dermatitis and other inflammatory skin conditions.
Our cotton is OEKO-TEX® certified and proven to contain no heavy metals or harmful substances. Formaldehyde is one of the main chemicals used in textiles to maintain properties such as shape and colour. It is also a know carcinogen and causes allergic reactions. While new laws are helping to reduce levels, it is still permitted up to 16ppm for infants’ clothing and 75ppm in adults’. Our mineral cotton contains zero formaldehyde. We instead achieve the same durability features by enhancing the cotton fibres through the mineral application.
In the same way, this unique treatment removes the need for additional finishing and fixing stages using resins and molecular refinement. The process is 100% organic and we use all-natural dyes. Traditional reactive dyes require large amounts of salts and alkalis to overcome an ionic charge imbalance. While this helps the dyes bond to the fabric so that they maintain their colour, it also means the majority of garments (both cotton and synthetics) are highly alkaline.
This pH imbalance can seriously damage our delicate skin membrane. The acid mantle is a thin protective surface film that maintains moisture levels, supports and maintains the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis), and provides microbial defence. A pH level that is too alkaline will disrupt the skin’s acid mantle, leaving it vulnerable to bacterial attack. It also leads to redness, breakouts, and dry, ageing skin.
Another impressive attribute of our “super-cotton” is it’s electromagnetic shielding. The mineral compound within the fibres helps to absorbs neutrons and therefore limit radiation of the skin.
In a new era of working from home, more flexible and varied lifestyles have also been reflected in clothing choices. The distinction between casual wear and athletic wear has become less noticeable. With this evolving trend of “athleisure” in mind, we have carefully considered both athletic performance and the comfort factor of the fabric to provide a seamless transition between exercise and daily life.
A key functional feature of our leggings is their enhanced flexibility. A four-way stretch system, means that the material can move both horizontally and vertically. This provides the wearer with greater freedom of movement and makes them an ideal choice for yoga, as well as the demands of everyday life.
Despite the fabric’s ability to expand and contract, the combed cotton has been specifically engineered to remain completely opaque at all times.
Combing the fibres also removes impurities, ensuring a finer, soft-touch finish. The feel-good-factor is completed with a luxurious brushed finish on the inside.
