Yoga, an ancient practice renowned for its physical and mental benefits, has evolved over time to incorporate various elements and styles.

Nowadays the list of options is endless for the modern yogi with adventurous tastes, Bikram yoga, Vinyasa yoga, Kundalini yoga, Power yoga, Air yoga, Acro yoga, Nude yoga, Laughter yoga, Tantrum yoga, Hot yoga, Power yoga and even, our favourite, Goat yoga.

There’s truly something for everyone to balance their chakras with. *We don’t recommend mixing Goat yoga with Tantrum or Nude yoga : )

A recent intriguing addition is kitten yoga - the feline equivalent of puppy yoga. This unique combination of yoga poses and catty companionship offers a delightful and therapeutic experience.

Imagine practising downward dog while a fluffy kitten curls up beneath your hands or savasana with a purring kitten nestled on your chest. The gentle presence of these adorable creatures can have a profound impact on our well-being.

Not only does it provide a fun and engaging way to practise yoga, but it also offers numerous benefits for both humans and kittens alike.

History and Background of Kitten Yoga

While the exact ‘origins’ of kitten yoga are unclear, it's likely that the idea emerged from the growing popularity of animal-assisted therapy and yoga. These practices have been shown inscientific studies to have positive effects on mental health, stress reduction, and overall well-being.

Imane Markat, founder ofPets Yoga London says the motivation behind her kitten yoga classes is to help both people and pets:

‘’I am a crazy cat-lady, I was looking for a concept that makes people interact more with pets. So I started thinking it could be good for small pets as they are at an age where they’re starting to interact with people, and for people it’s very stress-relieving to spend time with pets . . .’’

The combination of yoga and kittens seems like a natural fit, as both offer relaxation, comfort, and a sense of connection. The gentle nature of kittens and the calming atmosphere of a yoga practice create a harmonious environment that can be beneficial for both humans and felines.

How to Practise Kitten Yoga: Tips for a safe, fun class.

Practising kitten yoga is a delightful experience that can be enjoyed by both humans and felines. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

  1. Find a suitable location - Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you and your kitten can relax undisturbed. Ensure the area is free of any hazards that could harm the kitten and avoid any poses that could put your kitten at risk of injury. Set clear guidelines for participants.
  1. Prepare your kitten - Make sure your kitten is comfortable and relaxed before starting your yoga practice. If your kitten is anxious or playful, you may want to wait until they are more settled.
  1. Start with gentle poses - Begin with simple yoga poses that allow for interaction with your kitten. Some suitable options include:
  • Child's Pose: Sit back on your heels with your knees hip-width apart. Rest your forehead on the floor and place your arms by your sides. Your kitten can snuggle up beneath your arms or against your legs.
  • Downward-Facing Dog: Place your hands shoulder-width apart and your feet hip-width apart. Lift your hips up toward the ceiling, forming an inverted V shape. Your kitten can play with your feet or curl up beneath your hands.
  • Supine Twist: Lie on your back with your knees bent. Extend your arms out to the sides and gently rotate your knees to one side. Your kitten can rest on your belly or legs.
  1. Incorporate play - Take breaks during your yoga practice to play with your kitty. This will help keep it engaged and entertained, you can use toys, treats, or simply engage in gentle play.
  1. Be patient and flexible - Remember that kitten yoga is a fun and enjoyable activity. Be patient with your kitten and allow them to explore the poses at their own pace. If your kitten becomes restless or uncomfortable, simply adjust the pose or take a break.
  • Find suitable kittens - Reach out to local animal shelters or rescue organisations to find kittens that are suitable for a yoga class. Ensure the kittens are friendly, socialised, and comfortable around people.
  • Provide necessary supplies - Have plenty of water, food, and litter boxes available for the kittens. You may also want to provide toys or blankets to keep the kittens entertained.
